[00:00 - 00:45]

Becca: Worrying about work or exams, war and climate change in the news. It’s no wonder that modern life is stressful. What makes you stress, Neil?

Neil: Oh, good question. I think not having enough time to do something, that really makes me stressed out. How about you?

Becca: Um. When I’m trying to do something that I’ve never tried before and I’m not very good at it, that makes me feel really stressed.

[01:30 - 02:15]

Claudia Hammond: So, overwhelm is an emotional state where you are struggling with your current situation. So, you might feel overloaded, you might feel you can’t cope, and that might be a temporary thing, hopefully. But if it’s not in the longer term, if that becomes more of a kind of chronic…

  • “struggle with”:与…

[04:20 - 05:10]

Neil: Well, I try to slow down, uh, pause, take a breath and think, ‘at some point, probably later today, everything will be okay again.’

Becca: Yeah, same. But in my mind, I’m telling myself that, ‘I will be better at what I’m doing. I just need to practise more.’

  • “I just need to…":我只需要…,用于表达简单的解决方案

(Keep Calm and Carry On)的文化传统一脉相承。

语法要点: 注意"will be" + 形容词的结构:“everything will be okay”(一切都会好起来的),“I will be better”(我会变得更好)。

[03:45 - 04:15]

Claudia Hammond: Burnout is physical or mental exhaustion caused by working too hard. It can happen when you feel overwhelmed for a long period of time, when that chronic feeling continues. It’s really important to recognize the signs early.

  • “caused by”:由…

  • “Many healthcare workers experienced burnout during the pandemic.”

Neil: Hello. This is 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I’m Neil.

Becca: And I’m Becca. Worrying about work or exams, war and climate change in the news.

Neil: I find that stressful, too.

Claudia Hammond: So, overwhelm is an emotional state where you are struggling with your current situation. So, you might feel overloaded, you might feel you can’t cope, and that might be a temporary thing, hopefully. But if it’s not in the longer term, if that becomes more of a kind of chronic feeling, then that can lead to burnout.

Neil: Burnout is physical or mental exhaustion caused by working too hard. It can happen when you feel overwhelmed for a long period of time, when that chronic feeling continues. It’s really important to recognize the signs early.

Becca: What are some of the things that people can do if they’re feeling stressed?

Claudia Hammond: Well, there are lots of things. One of the things is to make sure that you actually have a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. What works for me might not work for you. So it’s really important to find what works for you. Some people find that making a to-do list really helps because it sharpens the mind and helps them to focus. Other people find that they just need to take a break, to step away from whatever they’re doing.

Neil: Well, I try to slow down, uh, pause, take a breath and think, ‘at some point, probably later today, everything will be okay again.’

Becca: Yeah, same. But in my mind, I’m telling myself that, ‘I will be better at what I’m doing. I just need to practise more.’

Neil: And that’s this week’s 6 Minute English. We hope you feel less stressed after listening! You can find more on our website at bbclearningenglish.com. Bye for now!

Becca: Bye!
