Phil: I’ve just had an idea! Why don’t we learn four phrases with ‘idea’?

1. Float an idea →

No one knew what to do, so I floated the idea of stopping and trying again tomorrow.”

2. Bat an idea around →

I’m just batting around an idea, but why don’t we try using AI?”

3. Put ideas into someone’s head →

Don’t go putting ideas into my head – I’m not spending all my money on that!”

4. That’s someone’s idea of → 表达想法差异

Sorry, that’s just his idea of a joke, but it’s not funny.”
  • 解析: 常用于委婉表达不认同,例如「That’s your idea of fun?」(这也是你理解的乐趣?)。

  1. 在工作中,哪种短语更适合提出创意float an idea 还是 bat an idea around?
  3. 「Put ideas into someone’s head」

Teacher’s Tip

  • 语调模仿: 在说 float an idea 时,语调上扬,表现轻松;而 put ideas into someone’s head语气下沉,带有警告意味。

Phil: I’ve just had an idea! Why don’t we learn four phrases with ‘idea’?

We can use “float an idea” to mean suggest an idea – gently suggest. No one knew what to do, so I floated the idea of stopping and trying again tomorrow.

“Bat an idea around” – that’s when you say something just to see what people think of your idea. I’m just batting around an idea, but why don’t we try using AI?

When you “put ideas into someone’s head”, you make them think of doing something, and often that’s something they shouldn’t really do. Don’t go putting ideas into my head. I’m not spending all my money on that!

If you say “that’s his idea of hard work”, or anything else, he thinks it’s hard work – you probably don’t. We use it when we think differently about something. Sorry, that’s just his idea of a joke, but it’s not funny.
