Georgie: Let’s learn four phrases with ‘deal’.

If something is no big deal, it’s not important. You can also say ’no biggie’ for short. Don’t worry about being late. It’s no big deal.

If something is a done deal, it means a plan or agreement is finalised and won’t change. After the final interview went well, she knew the job was a done deal.

A deal breaker is something that makes you not continue with an agreement or relationship. A lack of honesty is a deal breaker for him.

And lastly, a great deal of something is another way of saying a lot of something. It’s typically used with uncountable nouns. He spends a great deal of time lying on the sofa watching TV.

Notes

  • A great deal of is used with uncountable nouns (time, money, effort) — not countable ones. Use “a great many” for plural countable nouns instead.
  • The opposite scale runs from very informal (“no big deal”) to fairly formal, literary usage (“a great deal”).
