Article 正文

China has accused the US of trying to pressure it into accepting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, warning that the move violates international law and inflames regional tensions.

Speaking at a regular news briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the US was seeking to coerce China into endorsing the blockade — which bars ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports — as part of its campaign of maximum pressure on Tehran.

“Maximum pressure”

“The US is using the Hormuz blockade as a new tool of maximum pressure on Iran,” Guo said. “China firmly opposes the US’s illegal unilateral sanctions and bloc politics, and will continue to support Iran’s legitimate rights, including its right to peaceful nuclear energy.”

The blockade, imposed by the US after talks with Iran collapsed over the weekend, has triggered a diplomatic row between Washington and Beijing. The US Central Command said neutral shipping to non-Iranian destinations would not be blocked, but Beijing has dismissed the assurance as insufficient.

“Clear violation of international law”

Guo said the blockade represented a “clear violation of international law” and warned it would deepen the humanitarian crisis in Iran and disrupt global supply chains. “The Hormuz strait is a critical artery for global energy security,” he said. “Coercing other countries to endorse illegal unilateral measures will only backfire.”

China, which has been Iran’s biggest oil customer, has repeatedly called for the US to lift sanctions on Tehran and return to nuclear negotiations.
