Iran has threatened to shut down all Red Sea shipping unless Washington lifts its naval blockade on Iranian ports, raising the stakes in a stand-off that is rattling global energy and shipping markets.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations set out the ultimatum in a letter seen by the South China Morning Post, escalating the risk of a broader regional conflict in the wake of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

The letter, addressed to the UN Security Council, accused the US of violating international maritime law with its naval blockade of Iranian ports, which the Islamic Republic warned was an “act of war”.

“In line with its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran reserves the right to take all necessary and proportionate measures, including actions to enforce the prohibition of warships and belligerent vessels from the Red Sea,” the letter read.

Washington has cited cautious optimism about a potential deal with Tehran, with US President Donald Trump saying earlier this week there was “a very good chance” of an agreement.

But Iran said its oil exports — a key source of government revenue — had been “devastated” by US sanctions, leaving little incentive for compromise.

European shipping firms have already begun diverting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Red Sea entirely, as the military situation worsens.
